Skill Level and what to expect

Intermediate to advanced rider. There will be an average of 12 miles riding each day during the 3 - day trip. Each rider will be responsible to carry their gear on the bike. We will be riding groomed snow machine trail. Sometimes conditions can be firm and fast, and other times the snow can be very soft and slow. There are steady climbs and fun descents! There might be times we have to push our bikes up hill. Temperatures vary between -5 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit around this time of year.

The White Mountains National Recreation Area is one of the funnest multi-day winter bikepacking trip in Alaska. This one-million-acre park offers stunning scenery, peaceful solitude and outstanding opportunities for year-round recreation including hiking, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skiing, wildlife and scenic viewing. The White Mountains National Recreation Area offers 250 miles of maintained winter trails, 14 public recreation cabins and trails shelters maintained by the Bureau of Land Management , surrounded by jagged limestone mountains and cliffs, high mountain passes, and broad, rounded valleys.

What AKBA will provide

  • Otso Voytek fat bike (4” to 5” tires)

WHAT TO BRING

  • If you have footwear that has proven to work in sub-zero conditions for a 5-hour bike ride, bring those. Otherwise, sneakers or trail shoes will work under the Neos.

  • Liner gloves, mid-weight and heavy gloves

  • Lunch during the ride days.

  • Extra warm layers (puffy jacket or fleece)

  • Active wear for riding

  • Small day pack but big enough to fit an extra layer and snacks

  • Sleeping bag. 0 - 20 degree recommended. (We rent sleeping bags if needed)

  • Camera!

Weather

Though we can not predict the weather, we can be prepared. Even on the sunniest of days weather can come in quick. Bring your layers and a pair of liner gloves to keep you warm during the ride.

Trip Includes transportation

Are you coming from Anchorage? We can provide transportation to the White Mountains from Anchorage. That is a 340-mile drive. Then we will drive to the Wickersham Trailhead together, which is a 38-mile drive.

Are you coming from Fairbanks? We can drive you to the Wickersham Trailhead, no problem.
